URGENT UPDATE: The AFLW national draft combine is rapidly approaching, with key local talent set to participate in the event from October 1 to 3, 2023, in Melbourne. This three-day showcase will feature 46 players selected from across Australia, including standout athletes from local clubs.
Among those invited are Calder Cannons players Jade McLay and Chloe Baker-West, along with Northern Knights stars Olivia Gorman, Marlo Graham, and Scarlett Johnson. Their participation highlights a significant opportunity for these young athletes to showcase their skills on a national stage, potentially propelling them into professional careers.
In another exciting development, the Diamond Valley Cricket Association (DVCA) has just released its fixtures for the upcoming season. The competition will see the top two grades maintaining 10 teams each, while the Mash Shield expands to include 12 teams with the addition of Old Ivanhoe Grammarians and Keon Park. The action kicks off on October 4 with a one-day match, setting the stage for an exhilarating season.
Meanwhile, in the Coates Talent League, Shauna McElligott has been named the Calder Cannons top girls player, earning the prestigious Mg McArthur Medal. This recognition comes during the club’s awards night, where she finished ahead of fellow nominees Jasmina Curtis and Felicity Mahoney. Additionally, Madison Spring-Brown was acknowledged for her courage, while Eden Grant received the coaches’ award.
In a dramatic finish to the National Premier League (NPL) season, Hume City secured a 4-0 victory against St Albans, but it wasn’t enough to clinch a finals berth. Despite being in the top six for most of the season, Hume needed favorable results elsewhere to advance. Unfortunately, Dandenong City also triumphed with a 3-0 win, keeping Hume two points shy of the finals.
Conversely, Whittlesea United celebrated a crucial final round win in the Victorian Premier League 2, ensuring their safety in the league for another year and avoiding relegation.
As these local athletes prepare for their respective seasons and competitions, the excitement and anticipation within the community are palpable. Stay tuned for more updates as the AFLW draft combine and the DVCA season kick off, and see how local talent rises to the occasion.
