Four Council Seats Open for Election in Broome on October 18

Shire of Broome offices.

The Shire of Broome is set to fill four council positions during the elections on October 18, 2023. Although nearly half of the council seats are up for grabs, the candidate pool shows limited change, with only two newcomers entering the race.

Nominations have officially closed, and the current council members seeking re-election include Deputy Shire President Desiree Male, along with Councillors Sean Cooper, Philip Matsumoto, and Peter Taylor. Joining the competition are residents Sam Archibald and Scott Kneebone, both of whom bring diverse backgrounds and experience to the electoral landscape.

New Candidates Bring Unique Perspectives

Sam Archibald has extensive experience in community support services and the disability sector. She has also contributed to the growth of both small and large businesses in the region. In her election application, Archibald expressed her commitment to Broome’s future, stating, “I’m passionate about contributing to Broome’s future. I’ve always had a strong focus on inclusivity for people of all ages and abilities, youth engagement, and supporting local businesses to thrive.”

Her vision includes a sustainable future where all voices are represented, ensuring that the community continues to evolve while maintaining its unique identity.

Scott Kneebone, a member of the Bangerang community from the Murray River and now residing in Broome, has made a name for himself through various local initiatives. Known for coaching junior floorball and participating in community events such as cooking for the Broome Senior High School P&C barbecue, Kneebone is also involved in local turtle monitoring and serves on the Cable Beach Primary School board.

With two decades of public service experience, Kneebone has developed skills in human resources and Indigenous policy, and currently works in emergency management and crisis planning. He stated, “I’m asking for your support to be your councillor,” emphasizing that his background equips him to contribute effectively to the council and help the community thrive.

Election Details and Voting Information

The Shire of Broome has made all six election applications available for public viewing on its website. Current council members Chris Mitchell, Jan Lewis, Johani Mamid, Ellen Smith, and Melanie Virgo will remain in their positions for an additional two years unless they resign before the term ends.

Electors will have the option to vote in person on October 18. For those unable to attend, postal voting, absentee voting, and early voting are available. While voting is not compulsory in Western Australia, local electors are strongly encouraged to participate in the election to ensure their voices are heard.

As the election date approaches, the focus will likely sharpen on the candidates’ platforms and how they plan to address the needs of the Broome community.
