BREAKING: Ardeer South Primary School has achieved a significant environmental milestone by planting 1,800 trees and plants on its grounds since 2021. This initiative is part of the “More Trees for a Cooler Greener West” program, aimed at enhancing air quality and providing shade as summer temperatures rise.
The urgent need for this program is underscored by the fact that Melbourne’s western region suffers from below-average tree canopy cover and high heat vulnerability. Principal Andrea Markham expressed enthusiasm about the results, stating, “The canopy created around the school has already increased wildlife, as confirmed by our annual biodiversity audits.”
On July 27, students participated in National Tree Day, planting 50 trees with their prep buddies to develop what they proudly call “our backyard forest.” Markham emphasized, “This project embeds sustainability practices and demonstrates the positive impact of our students’ efforts.”
In an exciting development, Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos and Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny visited the school on September 14 to announce a remarkable $9.5 million funding boost. This investment aims to plant an additional 500,000 trees across Melbourne, addressing the urgent need for more green spaces in urban areas.
Dimopoulos highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “We are helping to cool down Melbourne’s suburbs by planting half a million more trees where they are needed most.” This funding will also support a new tree canopy mapping project, providing crucial data that will enhance urban planning and monitor tree coverage effectively over time.
The momentum generated by Ardeer South Primary School’s tree planting efforts not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also instills a sense of responsibility among students. The initiative encourages children to actively engage with their surroundings and understand the importance of caring for the environment.
As the planting continues, the community eagerly anticipates the positive impact these trees will have on local biodiversity and climate resilience. This is a developing story that reflects a growing commitment to environmental stewardship in Melbourne.
Stay tuned for more updates on how these initiatives evolve and their impact on the community.
