Westmeadows’ Aaron Evans Wins League Best and Fairest Medal

UPDATE: In a stunning display of talent and dedication, Aaron Evans of the Westmeadows Tigers has been crowned the Essendon District Football League Division 2 Best and Fairest medalist, finishing the season with an impressive 25 votes—five ahead of competitors Joshua Trembearth and Samuel Pontin. This remarkable achievement was confirmed just last night, marking a significant milestone in Evans’ career as he led his team to a second consecutive grand final appearance.

Evans, who made the pivotal decision to abandon cricket for football, averaged an astonishing 28 disposals per game and scored 51 goals this season. “You never know what the umpires think,” Evans stated after receiving the award. “I’m just honored and privileged.” His exceptional performance not only caught the attention of fans but also solidified his role as a crucial player for the Tigers.

Tigers’ coach Ash Flavel expressed confidence in Evans throughout the season, often predicting that he would secure the coveted medal. “He let me do what I wanted really,” Evans remarked about Flavel’s supportive coaching style. “If I’m sore and don’t want to train, he says you know your own body now.”

Having played nearly 300 games for the Tigers, Evans’ commitment to football this year has paid off significantly. “Things just got in the way with work all week,” he explained regarding his decision to step away from cricket. “I didn’t have the love for cricket anymore. I was happy to just focus on footy.”

While celebrating his personal accolades, Evans highlighted that the ultimate goal remains the championship. The Tigers entered the season as favorites but fell short at the final hurdle. “It would have been good if we had an extra one,” he said. “I think we keep doing the same things; our game plan works. We’re due for a bit of luck in the finals if we get there again.”

The Tigers also recognized Gemma Wright, who earned the women’s division 1 Best and Fairest medal, underscoring the club’s commitment to excellence across all levels. Tigers’ secretary Liana Keenan commented on the significance of both players’ achievements, noting their roles in rebuilding the club’s culture: “They are both integral to redeveloping our community and club identity.”

As the Westmeadows Tigers look ahead to their next challenge, the focus will be on leveraging their strong performances and community support to secure the long-desired senior flags for both men’s and women’s teams. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for updates on the team’s journey in the upcoming finals.
