A new culinary venture is set to transform the dining scene in Charleston as acclaimed chef Luis Martinez prepares to open his Oaxacan-inspired restaurant, Xolo, at 73 Spring Street. This announcement follows the relocation of the existing restaurant, Kultura, which is expected to complete its move by October. Martinez, who is known for his successful taco shop, Tequila Rosita, in Asheville, aims to bring his passion for Oaxacan cuisine to a city he deeply admires.
Martinez expressed his enthusiasm for the Charleston culinary landscape, stating, “A lot of people in the Charleston industry know me. It’s funny because I think more people know me over there than actually in Asheville.” His intent with Xolo is to showcase the rich culinary traditions of Oaxaca, Mexico, where he was born and raised. “What I’m trying to do is bring in a different type of food and try to showcase the Mexican expression of cuisine and culture,” he added, emphasizing his commitment to enhancing the local food scene.
While the menu for Xolo is still under development, Martinez has unveiled plans for two distinct dining services: breakfast and lunch, with dinner service available on Fridays and Saturdays. Breakfast offerings are expected to include breakfast tacos, burritos, masa pancakes, and chilaquiles. “In the morning we’ll have breakfast–breakfast tacos, breakfast burritos, masa pancakes and chilaquiles,” Martinez detailed.
The dinner menu will focus on traditional Oaxacan dishes, further enriching Charleston’s diverse culinary offerings. Additionally, the restaurant will serve coffee and pastries alongside breakfast items. Martinez is also exploring options to source natural wines from Ensenada for the dinner service, contributing to an authentic dining experience.
The interior design of Xolo will reflect a blend of elements from Kultura while incorporating indigenous art and decor to celebrate Oaxacan culture. Martinez aims to create an inviting atmosphere that resonates with the cultural richness of his heritage.
Although an official opening date has not been confirmed, the team at Xolo is targeting late fall for the launch, pending the completion of Kultura’s relocation. This new endeavor promises to be a noteworthy addition to Charleston’s vibrant food scene, catering to both locals and visitors who seek an authentic taste of Oaxacan cuisine.
