NSW Health has issued a warning for residents of northern Sydney following a confirmed case of measles. The individual was infectious during visits to several locations in the area after returning from Indonesia, where an active outbreak of the disease is ongoing. Authorities advise anyone who attended these locations to monitor for symptoms until October 4, 2025.
Details of the Measles Case
According to Dr. Michael Staff, Director of Public Health for the Northern Sydney Local Health District, the locations associated with the confirmed case do not currently pose an ongoing risk. However, he emphasized the importance of vigilance for those who may have been exposed. Symptoms of measles, which can take up to 18 days to appear, typically start with fever, sore eyes, and cough, followed by a distinctive red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head and neck.
Dr. Staff stated, “Anyone who develops symptoms should call ahead to their GP or emergency department to inform them of the potential measles case to avoid exposing other patients.”
Vaccination and Prevention
Measles is a highly infectious disease that can be effectively prevented through vaccination. Dr. Staff reminded the community to ensure their vaccinations are up to date. The measles vaccine is available free of charge for children at 12 and 18 months of age, and it is also provided at no cost in New South Wales for anyone born in 1966 or later who has not yet received two doses.
For those planning to travel, especially to regions experiencing outbreaks, confirming vaccination status is crucial. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and effective; individuals can receive additional doses if unsure of their immunization history.
Parents of children under 12 months can consult their GP about administering the MMR vaccine from six months of age if they intend to travel overseas. MMR vaccinations are accessible through GPs for all ages and pharmacies for individuals over five.
For further information on potential exposure locations, individuals can visit the NSW Health website. Anyone experiencing symptoms or with questions regarding measles should contact their GP or call Healthdirect at 1800 022 222.
