Mavenir has been chosen by Iridium Communications Inc. to implement the core network for its Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN), which will enable global satellite-based Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and Direct-to-Device (D2D) services. This strategic partnership, announced on September 23, 2025, aims to enhance Iridium’s capabilities in providing seamless connectivity through its satellite network.
Under this agreement, Mavenir will deploy its containerized, cloud-native Converged Packet Core solution within Iridium’s environment on Amazon Web Services (AWS). This move aligns with Iridium’s strategy to integrate 3GPP standards-based NTN capabilities, ensuring readiness for future D2D offerings.
Ashok Khuntia, President of Core Networks for Mavenir, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “This collaboration with Iridium is a strategic milestone in Mavenir’s mission to enable seamless connectivity across terrestrial and non-terrestrial domains.” He noted that the deployment of Mavenir’s solution helps facilitate global NB-IoT services, showcasing the adaptability of their cloud-native core solutions for satellite networks.
Comprehensive Network Features
Mavenir’s solution encompasses a full suite of core network functions, including Converged Session Management, Policy Control, and Network Exposure Function, along with messaging capabilities. These functions are supported by a centralized operations and analytics platform designed for high availability and geo-redundancy across multiple AWS regions.
Iridium’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Tim Last, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, “As we prepare to launch Iridium NTN Direct, our partnership with Mavenir will help ensure a strong foundation for the service.” He highlighted that whether for IoT or D2D, Iridium NTN Direct aims to provide a global and reliable solution for mobile network operators, chipmakers, and consumers.
The project facilitates easy integration with Iridium’s existing provisioning and billing systems. It also supports NB-IoT traffic delivery across various interfaces, including IP, UDP, TCP, and Non-IP Data Delivery (NIDD). This future-oriented approach positions Iridium for a smooth transition towards 5G NR, allowing the same backend infrastructure to support D2D connectivity with minimal downtime.
Mavenir’s Expanding Role in Satellite Networks
This latest achievement bolsters Mavenir’s growing portfolio in Non-Terrestrial Network solutions, reinforcing its capacity to assist satellite operators with proven, standards-compliant packet core technologies optimized for cloud-native environments.
Mavenir has established itself as a leader in creating the future of networks through AI-enabled, cloud-native solutions that promote sustainable practices. The company serves over 300 communications service providers across more than 120 countries, reaching over 50% of the world’s subscribers.
