URGENT UPDATE: Construction has officially begun on the highly anticipated Monks Jazz Bar at 310 E St Elmo, Austin. The venue, known for its intimate atmosphere and exceptional live jazz performances, is set to open its doors in early January 2024.
According to public records, the project will involve an interior renovation costing $120,000, aimed at transforming the existing building into a vibrant jazz bar complete with restrooms and a full bar setup. This development comes as the community eagerly awaits the return of live music in a dedicated space.
Monks Jazz Bar began as a popular pop-up listening room and has evolved into a state-of-the-art audio and video recording studio. “Our curated concert series features the best improvisational jazz groups and musicians the region has to offer,” the official website states. The venue aims to create a unique experience for jazz lovers, providing a casual alternative to loud bars and expensive performance halls.
The founder, Collin, pivoted to livestreaming concerts during the pandemic, showcasing talent from his living room. He later found a suitable space that could accommodate both his piano repair business and full band livestreams, leading to the creation of the East Austin Piano Shop and Monks Jazz Bar.
In 2021, Monks was voted “Best Virtual Listening Room” by Austin Chronicle readers, solidifying its reputation in the local music scene. Now, the move to a permanent location marks a significant step towards fulfilling their dream of offering an intimate jazz environment to the public.
Residents and jazz enthusiasts can expect a unique venue that fosters community and celebrates the rich culture of jazz music. As the construction progresses, updates will be provided to keep the community informed about the bar’s opening and upcoming events.
Stay tuned for more developments as Monks Jazz Bar prepares to become a cornerstone of Austin’s vibrant jazz scene!
