Phelps Family Unites to Honor Legacy in Byron Bay Tribute

The Phelps family gathered in Byron Bay on October 4, 2023, to celebrate their rich family legacy and honor the memory of David Phelps. The reunion brought together approximately 100 relatives from various regions, including Western Australia, Queensland, and the Australian Capital Territory, along with towns throughout New South Wales.

The Phelps family has deep roots in Byron Bay. Pansy and Keith Phelps spent many years living at 123 Jonson Street. Keith worked as a slaughterman at Anderson Meat Works and was known for his skill in building bicycles, often helping locals with various tasks. Pansy dedicated her life to raising their ten children: Nola (deceased), David (deceased), Joy, June, Fay, Judith, Warren, Noel, Dawn, and Robert.

Sport played a pivotal role in the Phelps family dynamic. All ten children were active in a variety of sports, with the four boys heavily involved in the Byron Bay Surf Club. They competed in boat races, beach events, and swimming competitions during the era of notable figures such as Count Haskew and Billy Winter. David, the eldest, distinguished himself as a champion swimmer and beltman, winning multiple New South Wales country titles. His brothers Noel and Robert excelled in rescue and resuscitation, while Warren participated in boat and beach events. Today, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren continue the family’s legacy within the surf club.

A Day of Remembrance

The reunion on October 4 was marked by laughter, storytelling, and shared memories of family bonds. Several members of the Phelps family have represented Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland in various sports, including softball, cricket, swimming, surf lifesaving, and athletics. This legacy highlights the family’s commitment to both sports and community.

On the following day, October 5, under clear skies at Byron Bay Main Beach, the family gathered once again to bid farewell to David Phelps. His ashes were scattered into the sea, accompanied by flowers and petals that drifted gently with the tide. This poignant ceremony served as a serene tribute to a beloved husband, father, brother, and athlete.

The Phelps family reunion not only celebrated a rich history but also reinforced the connections that bind them together, showcasing the enduring impact of their shared experiences and values in Byron Bay.
