Sydney’s $50M Plan to Transform Moore Park Golf Course Revealed

UPDATE: Sydney’s government has just announced a controversial $50 million proposal to drastically reshape the Moore Park golf course, a plan that has ignited fierce debate among residents and stakeholders. This ambitious project aims to convert nearly half of the 45-hectare site into a vibrant 20-hectare civic park, complete with new sports fields, exercise tracks, and a mini putt-putt course.

The draft plans will be made available for public feedback starting Tuesday, marking a crucial moment for community input. The proposal includes a reimagined nine-hole golf course and an expanded 90-bay driving range at Moore Park South, designed to serve the growing population in Sydney’s inner south and east.

Planning Minister Paul Scully emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating it’s about “creating a backyard for the thousands of current and future residents living in one of the densest communities in Australia.” The plan aims to enhance public recreational space while maintaining golfing facilities, ensuring that Moore Park continues to offer amenities for both residents and golf enthusiasts.

This proposal is not without contention. The plan has created a rift between Premier Chris Minns, City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, and various stakeholders, including the golf club, local councils, and the NSW opposition. Critics argue that the golf course is a vital recreational resource and express concern over the loss of golfing space.

The population near Moore Park South is expected to surge to nearly 790,000 residents by 2041, highlighting the pressing need for additional green spaces amidst increasing residential density. The government’s intention to reclaim land along the western boundary and part of the area north of Dacey Avenue aims to maximize public access and recreational opportunities for nearby neighborhoods, including Green Square, Redfern, Zetland, and Waterloo.

As the public feedback period begins, all eyes will be on how residents react to this significant transformation. Stakeholders are urged to voice their opinions on the draft plans, which will shape the future of Moore Park and the community surrounding it. The coming weeks will prove critical as officials gather insights before finalizing the proposal.

Stay tuned for updates as this developing story unfolds and impacts the lives of thousands in Sydney. Your voice matters in shaping the future of this beloved recreational space!
