Severe Storms Slam SEQ: Hailstones Up to 9 cm, More on the Way

URGENT UPDATE: Severe storms have wreaked havoc across South-East Queensland (SEQ), bringing hailstones measuring up to 9 centimetres in diameter and heavy rainfall. The worst of the storm system has likely passed, but more storms are possible this Sunday, with meteorologists warning of continued severe weather.

According to senior meteorologist Angus Hines, while the intensity of today’s weather is expected to lessen, pockets of heavy rain and thunderstorms could still disrupt the region. “The rest of today is a little less severe,” Hines stated, but he cautioned that the risk of damaging storms remains.

Witnesses report significant destruction, including the complete devastation of the Devilish Doughnuts stand at Esk State School, which was obliterated by the hailstorm on Saturday. In addition, multiple injuries were reported, including a serious incident involving Caleb, an employee at Krunchy Kandy, who suffered a head injury and a possible broken hand while assisting others during the chaotic weather.

The storm system unleashed up to 40 millimetres of rain in Brisbane within a short period, with wind speeds exceeding 100 kilometres per hour. In some areas of the Darling Downs, rainfall totals were reported to be more than double that amount.

The largest hailstones recorded were comparable to cricket balls, causing widespread damage and prompting emergency services to respond rapidly to the situation. Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant as the threat of additional severe thunderstorms persists.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advise residents to stay updated on weather alerts. The next few days will be critical as the region assesses the storm’s impact and prepares for any further developments.

As SEQ recovers from this unexpected weather event, the community remains resilient. Individuals are encouraged to share their experiences and any damage reports to assist local authorities in their response efforts.
