Armidale Launches Family-Focused Running Festival in 2024

UPDATE: Armidale is set to host its inaugural family-friendly running festival in January 2024, aimed at attracting both tourists and locals to the area. Organiser Ryan Kelso announced the event, inspired by a successful coastal festival, emphasizing community, fitness, and local culture.

The festival will take place in the heart of Armidale at Civic Park, featuring not only races but also live music, local food, and community stalls. “It’s more than just a race weekend; it’s a celebration of everything that makes Armidale special,” Kelso stated. With a variety of activities planned, the festival aims to be a full-day experience for families and visitors alike.

The running schedule includes a 1-kilometre free fun run for kids, along with 3-kilometre, 5-kilometre, and 10-kilometre races on Saturday, capped off by a half-marathon on Sunday. These options cater to all fitness levels, making the event accessible to everyone.

Kelso highlighted the strong running community in Armidale, noting popular events like the Armidale Park Run that consistently draw participants. “There are a lot of good runners in Armidale, and our aim is to make this festival a family-oriented event,” he explained.

The festival is designed with families in mind, featuring picnic zones, play areas, and various kids’ activities such as face painting and jumping castles, ensuring entertainment for all ages. “By scheduling events to start at midday, we’re accommodating those who may have prior commitments,” Kelso added.

This initiative has received overwhelming support from local businesses and organizations, including UNE, Armidale Servies, and New England Toyota. Kelso emphasized the festival’s goal: “Our aim is to cover costs and reinvest any surplus back into the community.”

With competitive runners expected to vie for prize money, the overall atmosphere will center around fun and engagement. “While some family members compete, others can enjoy the festival activities,” Kelso noted, underscoring the event’s inclusive nature.

As excitement builds for this inaugural event, Armidale is poised to showcase its vibrant community spirit and stunning landscapes. Mark your calendars for January 2024 and prepare for a weekend that promises to blend fitness, family fun, and local culture in a way that only Armidale can deliver.

Stay tuned for more updates as details unfold regarding this exciting new festival!
