Scholarship Honours Poppy Crozier with First Work Placement Success

The Poppy Crozier Memorial Scholarship has successfully launched its first work placement, a significant achievement for the program established to honour the life and aspirations of Poppy Crozier. The scholarship, created by Poppy’s family following her tragic death in a road accident in 2023, aims to support young individuals pursuing careers in agriculture. Since its inception, the fund has raised over $117,000 through generous contributions from donors across Australia.

This year, the scholarship made its inaugural impact through local student Charlie Hannemann, who has been undertaking a paid work placement with Bunge, a global leader in agriculture. While balancing his university studies, Charlie has gained invaluable hands-on experience within the agricultural supply chain, furthering Poppy’s legacy in the community.

Charlie’s journey reflects a deep personal connection to Poppy, as the two grew up together in the Tatiara region and pursued the same educational path at the University of Adelaide in the Bachelor of Agricultural Studies program.

Transformative Experience for Emerging Talent

Describing his experience, Charlie stated, “It’s a really different experience for me — I’ve been delivering grain from our family farm to Bunge for as long as I can remember, but working inside the business has shown me aspects of agriculture beyond the farm gate.” He emphasized the insights he gained about food quality, safety, and the industry’s chain of responsibility requirements, which are crucial for modern agricultural practices.

Charlie also noted, “I’ve learnt about grain merchandising and trading and I’ve had the chance to assist with grain selling contracts. Everyone has been incredibly friendly and professional, and this experience has given me confidence and valuable office skills to promote myself more broadly once I finish my degree.”

The partnership between the Stand Like Stone Foundation and Bunge underscores a commitment to nurturing regional talent. According to Alyson Gilbey, Bunge’s HRBP senior manager, “Charlie’s experience reflects the spirit of the scholarship and the legacy of Poppy Crozier. We’re honoured to be part of this initiative and look forward to expanding the industry placement component in future years.”

A Legacy of Opportunity

The scholarship serves as both a tribute and a pathway for students interested in agriculture. Georgie McKay, chair of the Stand Like Stone Foundation, expressed pride in seeing Charlie thrive, stating, “This partnership with Bunge provides a powerful pathway for students to gain practical experience and build careers in agriculture. It feels especially fitting that the inaugural scholarship was awarded to one of Poppy’s lifelong friends.”

Applications for the next round of the Poppy Crozier Memorial Scholarship are now open, with a deadline set for 5 PM on November 15, 2026. Students who share a passion for agriculture are encouraged to apply through the Stand Like Stone Foundation’s official website.

Poppy’s parents, Charlie and Asha Crozier, expressed gratitude for the community support behind the scholarship. In a family statement, they noted, “Poppy adored her connection to home and agriculture and the opportunities it brings. It would mean so much to her to see Charlie continuing the same path she was excited about.”
