Charleston Bids Farewell to Celebrated Restaurants in August 2025

August 2025 marked a significant chapter in Charleston’s culinary landscape as the city saw the closure of several beloved dining establishments. Among the most notable were the esteemed Charleston Grill, the popular sports bar Cleats, and the charming French bistro La Bonne Franquette. Each venue left an indelible mark on the city’s vibrant dining scene, drawing loyal patrons for years.

Legacy of Charleston Grill

After an impressive 36 years of service, Charleston Grill closed its doors on August 23, 2025. Located at 224 King St, this fine dining restaurant was a cornerstone of Southern-inspired cuisine. Renowned for its exceptional dishes, including Fish a la Plancha and Prime Beef Tenderloin, the restaurant also boasted a diverse wine selection featuring Rhône Valley Whites and Bordeaux. Despite the closure, there are plans for the culinary team to return with a new dining concept, keeping the spirit of innovation alive.

Cleats and La Bonne Franquette Say Goodbye

Closing shortly after Charleston Grill, Cleats, situated at 1640 Meeting St, Suite 101, shut down on August 30, 2025. Known for its lively atmosphere and creative menu, this sports bar offered a blend of traditional and contemporary flavors. Patrons enjoyed an array of dishes, including innovative sandwiches and various wing options. Like Charleston Grill, Cleats intends to reopen under a new concept, promising a fresh experience for future guests.

On August 31, 2025, La Bonne Franquette served its last meal, ending a beloved chapter for fans of French cuisine. Nestled at 652 St Andrews Blvd, this bistro became famous for its classic dishes like steak frites and roasted duck, along with house-made desserts and charcuterie boards. The restaurant quickly gained a loyal following, making its closure particularly poignant for locals.

Charleston’s dining scene continues to evolve, but the departure of these cherished establishments leaves a noticeable void. Each restaurant contributed unique flavors and experiences, shaping the culinary identity of the region. While the city prepares for new dining concepts, the memories of Charleston Grill, Cleats, and La Bonne Franquette will endure in the hearts of those who dined there.
