Former Virgin Australia CEO Paul Scurrah Resumes Aviation Role

Former Virgin Australia chief executive Paul Scurrah has re-entered the aviation industry as the CEO of Fiji Airways. Taking the helm in November 2023, Scurrah aims to attract more tourists from the United States and Asia to the idyllic Pacific region. His return follows his departure from Virgin Australia in 2020 when the airline faced administration due to the impacts of the COVID pandemic.

Scurrah’s exit from Virgin Australia stemmed from strategic disagreements with the airline’s new private equity owner, Bain Capital. Now, at Fiji Airways, he has a clear mission: to position Fiji as a leading global tourist destination. “People are looking for unique experiences, not necessarily your traditional beach holiday in a resort,” Scurrah explained. He believes Fiji offers much more than what is currently recognized.

Expanding Fiji Airways’ Reach

Under Scurrah’s leadership, Fiji Airways is set to broaden its route network and promote lesser-known destinations within the archipelago and the wider Pacific. He emphasizes the importance of showcasing locations such as the Mamanuca Islands to drive tourism. “Over time, we’ll expand the product offering by making sure that some of the more obscure destinations within the Fiji group, or within the Pacific more broadly, are actually promoted and connected,” he added.

Fiji Airways is part of the Oneworld airline alliance and has been actively expanding its services. In April 2023, the airline launched a new route from Cairns, Australia, to Nadi, Fiji, with support from the Queensland government. This development, combined with existing services from Nadi to Los Angeles (LAX), creates a new pathway for North American tourists looking to explore the Great Barrier Reef.

Scurrah’s strategic vision for Fiji Airways includes not only increasing tourist numbers but also enhancing the overall travel experience. By focusing on unique offerings, he hopes to set Fiji apart from other destinations in the region.

As he embarks on this new journey, Scurrah’s experience and insight into the aviation sector are expected to play a crucial role in revitalizing Fiji Airways and promoting the Pacific as a premier travel destination.
