NAB Group has announced the appointment of Kanishka Raja as the Chief Executive Officer of its digital banking subsidiary, Ubank, effective immediately. This transition comes as Ubank aims to further enhance its digital services and customer experience in an increasingly competitive landscape.
In a statement, Les Matheson, Ubank Chair and Chief Operating Officer of NAB, expressed enthusiasm for Mr. Raja’s leadership. “Kanishka is a highly capable and dedicated leader with a passion for innovation and customer experience,” he noted. Mr. Matheson emphasized that Raja’s appointment marks a significant new chapter for Ubank, as the organization continues to scale its operations and deliver user-friendly banking solutions to Australians.
Mr. Raja succeeds Philippa Watson, who left her position in June 2023. Prior to this role, he had been part of Ubank’s leadership team for four years, where he oversaw the Home Lending business and later managed the Everyday Banking, Growth, and Data & Analytics teams. His extensive background also includes various leadership positions at the Commonwealth Bank, focusing on strategy, performance, and analytics, as well as several years with the Boston Consulting Group.
In his first remarks as CEO, Mr. Raja expressed his enthusiasm for leading Ubank at a pivotal moment for the digital banking sector. “I’m honoured to lead Ubank at a time when digital banking is reshaping how Australians manage their money,” he stated. He highlighted Ubank’s commitment to simplicity, transparency, and customer-first innovation as key factors that attracted him to the role.
Future Directions
Effective January 2025, Mr. Raja will report to Pete Steel, NAB Group Executive of Digital, Data & AI, when Mr. Steel joins NAB Group. This organizational change is expected to align Ubank’s strategic direction even more closely with NAB’s broader digital initiatives.
Ubank has recently celebrated several notable achievements, including the introduction of smart money management features in its mobile app, the launch of passkeys for app-based banking, and the automation of home lending processes. These developments reinforce the bank’s strategic focus on enhancing customer experience and driving digital innovation to better serve young Australians.
As Ubank continues to evolve, Mr. Raja’s leadership is likely to play a crucial role in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapidly changing financial landscape.
