Alesco Secondary College Seeks Volunteers for HSC Support

Alesco Secondary College in Newcastle is urgently seeking volunteers to assist students preparing for the Higher School Certificate (HSC). As the exam period approaches, many students at the college, who face learning difficulties and disabilities, require additional support to help them achieve their academic goals.

The college is looking for individuals to fill two essential roles: volunteer readers and writers. Readers will help students by reading exam content aloud, while writers will transcribe students’ responses. Those interested in volunteering do not need prior teaching experience. Instead, qualities such as empathy, patience, and a few hours of availability during the exam period are what the college values most.

Flexible Roles and Community Impact

The volunteer positions offer flexibility, accommodating various schedules. Training will be provided to ensure that volunteers feel confident in their roles. All volunteers must also hold a current Working With Children Check to ensure the safety and well-being of students.

Helga Smit, CEO of Atwea College, emphasized the importance of supporting students during this critical time. She noted that the HSC serves as a pathway to further education, employment, and independence. “These young people have incredible resilience and wisdom beyond their years,” she stated. “They’ve already proven they don’t give up easily. Now they need their community to show the same determination in supporting them.”

Smit highlighted the transformative effect volunteer support can have on students. “I’ve seen students light up when they realize someone from their community cares enough to spend hours helping them succeed,” she added. “It’s not about charity; it’s about leveling the playing field so every young person gets judged on their knowledge, not their circumstances.”

How to Get Involved

Community members interested in becoming partners in student success can complete an Expression of Interest form available on the college’s website. The call for volunteers reflects a broader initiative to foster inclusivity and support within the educational framework.

As the HSC exam season draws near, the need for volunteer readers and writers is more pressing than ever. Engaging in this initiative allows individuals to contribute to the academic success of students who may otherwise struggle to demonstrate their knowledge in a traditional exam setting.

By stepping forward, volunteers can make a significant impact on the lives of these students, helping to ensure they are equipped with the tools necessary for success in their educational journeys.
