Ararat Council Urges Community to Prepare for Severe Weather

The Ararat Rural City Council (ARCC) is urging residents to take critical safety measures as the region braces for a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating on January 9, 2024. This warning comes in light of predictions of severe weather conditions, including potential thunderstorm asthma, which could pose additional risks to the community.

As temperatures soar, the council is emphasizing the importance of fire and hot weather preparations for both urban and rural residents. ARCC has provided a list of essential safety advice to help mitigate risks associated with these extreme conditions.

Immediate Safety Recommendations

Residents are encouraged to review their fire preparedness plans and ensure that their homes are adequately equipped to withstand potential threats. Dr Tim Harrison, CEO of ARCC, highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, “A Catastrophic rating represents the worst possible conditions for grass and bushfires. Council is encouraging both urban and rural residents to take this situation seriously.”

He elaborated on the potential dangers, urging community members to consider that their lives might depend on the decisions they make before a fire breaks out. “Homes cannot withstand fires in these conditions. You may not be able to leave, and help may not be available,” Dr Harrison added.

Community Support and Vigilance

In light of these warnings, the ARCC is appealing to residents to look after one another and stay informed. The council is committed to providing timely updates and guidance as conditions evolve. It is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and adhere to the advice of local officials during this period of heightened risk.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for potential evacuations and to stay indoors during peak fire danger times. Keeping informed through official channels will be vital for community safety.

The ARCC emphasizes that proactive measures now can save lives and property later. As the community faces these challenging weather conditions, collaboration and caution will be key in ensuring everyone’s safety.
