Julia Sussman, co-founder of Youth HEAR, will step down as chief executive officer at the end of this year after eight years of leadership. Sussman, who has been instrumental in the organization’s mission to educate and empower young people about the Holocaust, will transition to the role of chair of the board in February 2026. Her decision marks a significant moment for Youth HEAR as it prepares for new leadership while ensuring continuity in its vision and values.
In a statement, Simone Starikov, who will assume a director role at Youth HEAR, praised Sussman for her transformative impact on the organization. “What began as a seed of an idea has grown into a vibrant multicultural community, fostering critical discussion among young people and inspiring thousands through education and dialogue,” she said. Starikov emphasized that Sussman’s extraordinary leadership and unwavering commitment have been at the core of Youth HEAR’s success.
Reflecting on her tenure, Sussman described the decision to step down as both challenging and celebratory. “Youth HEAR has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” she stated. “When we started this organization in 2018, our vision was to build something lasting, a movement that could outgrow its founders and continue to thrive under new leadership.”
Sussman expressed pride in reaching this milestone after eight years, including four as CEO. She highlighted the vital contributions of the organization’s volunteers, staff, and community, saying, “This was not an easy decision, but it is one to celebrate. It reflects the passion of our volunteers, the unwavering dedication of our staff and board, and the incredible support of our community.”
As Youth HEAR moves into this new chapter, it is now inviting applications for its next chief executive officer. The organization aims to continue its growth and impact under fresh leadership, while Sussman’s ongoing involvement will ensure a seamless transition. She remains deeply grateful for the experiences and connections made throughout her journey, acknowledging that her time with Youth HEAR has shaped her just as much as she has contributed to its mission.
