Mullum Farmers Market’s ‘Grow Your Own Lunchbox’ Celebrates 10 Years

The Mullum Farmers Market celebrated a significant milestone on October 14, 2023, marking the 10th anniversary of its innovative program, the ‘Grow Your Own Lunchbox’. The event showcased the culinary and gardening talents of students from five local schools: Ocean Shores, Goonengerry, Mullum, The Pocket, and Main Arm. Each school presented their unique lunchboxes and gardening efforts, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and healthy eating.

As the event unfolded, the quality of the entries impressed attendees and judges alike. Main Arm Public School emerged as the standout winner, taking home awards for both the best garden and the best lunchbox. This recognition highlights the school’s dedication to nurturing environmental consciousness among its students and promoting healthy eating habits.

Gardening expert Phil Dudman hosted the event, praising it for its potential to expand beyond the local community. “This initiative is not just a local celebration; it deserves a national rollout,” Dudman stated, emphasizing the positive impact such programs can have on children’s health and education.

The ‘Grow Your Own Lunchbox’ initiative encourages children to engage with their food sources, fostering an appreciation for fresh produce and the environment. By participating, students learn essential gardening skills and develop a deeper understanding of nutrition. The program also serves as a valuable opportunity for schools to unite, collaborate, and share best practices.

This year’s event drew a large crowd, with families and community members coming together to support the young gardeners. Attendees were able to sample various lunchbox offerings, many of which featured fruits and vegetables grown by the students themselves. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as families celebrated the hard work and creativity of the participating schools.

The success of the ‘Grow Your Own Lunchbox’ program illustrates the importance of community-driven initiatives in promoting healthy lifestyles among children. As awareness of nutrition and sustainability continues to grow, such programs could become vital components of school curricula across the country.

Looking ahead, plans for the next year’s event are already in motion, with organizers hoping to attract even more schools to participate. The Mullum Farmers Market continues to play a crucial role in fostering community spirit and promoting healthy eating through innovative programs like this. The ongoing success of ‘Grow Your Own Lunchbox’ reflects a collective commitment to nurturing the next generation’s relationship with food and the environment.
