Students and staff from Millicent’s Newbery Park Primary School, Mount Burr Primary School, and Rendelsham Primary School recently participated in a tour of Parliament House in Adelaide as part of the Civics in the City program. This initiative aims to provide funding for regional and remote schools to visit the seat of government, enhancing their understanding of democratic processes.
Engaging with Democracy
As part of their experience, the students engaged in a mock election organized by the Electoral Commission of South Australia. This interactive component allowed the young visitors to gain practical insights into the electoral process while fostering a sense of civic responsibility. During the tour, students wore the ceremonial wig and gown of the Speaker and carried the Mace, symbols of parliamentary authority that added a sense of authenticity to their experience.
The Civics in the City Grant Program is a collaborative effort involving the Parliament of South Australia, the Department for Education, and the Commissioner for Children and Young People. The program’s primary goal is to ensure that students from all parts of South Australia have access to firsthand experiences of the state’s democratic system and institutions.
Promoting Civic Awareness
By participating in this tour, students not only learned about the legislative process but also gained a greater appreciation for their role as future citizens. The program aims to bridge the gap between urban and rural education, ensuring that all students, regardless of their location, have the opportunity to engage with important civic concepts.
The initiative reflects a commitment to fostering civic literacy among young Australians. Through programs like this, participants are encouraged to become informed and active members of their communities, reinforcing the importance of democracy and participation in governance.
Overall, the visit to Parliament House served as a valuable educational experience for these students, equipping them with knowledge and understanding that will benefit them as they grow into responsible citizens.
