The Australian Ballet captivated audiences with a vibrant triple bill, showcasing three distinct works that exemplify the diversity of contemporary concert dance. Running at the Regent Theatre until October 4, 2023, this performance highlights the innovative choreography of William Forsythe, Jerome Robbins, and the world premiere of a new piece by resident choreographer Stephanie Lake.
The standout performance in this collection is Forsythe’s Blake Works V (The Barre Project), a fragmentary yet enthralling piece that opens with a duet featuring dancers Isobelle Dashwood and Callum Linnane. Their movements reflect Forsythe’s unique style, characterized by isolations and unusual body angles. The choreography is both airy and precise, with dynamic extensions that seem to dance around the stage like compass needles.
Attention then shifts to a ballet barre positioned upstage, where dancers engage in a series of fluid movements, turning and gliding before launching into the open space of the stage. Dancer Benedicte Bemet, dressed in powder blue, captivates with a series of stunning solos that combine speed with intricate, voluptuous shimmies.
The program continues with Robbins’ acclaimed Glass Pieces, accompanied by the evocative music of Philip Glass. Robbins, known for his theatrical prowess, delivers a work that encapsulates clarity and dramatic intensity. The first movement features 24 dancers adorned in a spectrum of colors, moving across the stage like confetti. This is followed by elegant soloist couples who leap into the performance, exuding an almost aggressive sense of optimism.
In the cooler second movement, a striking silhouette of women creates a mesmerizing shuffle against a blue backdrop. The choreography includes constant variations that engage the audience’s attention with circling movements, sidestepping, and pauses. The highlight of this segment is a dreamy pas de deux performed by Robyn Hendricks and Maxim Zenin, showcasing their lyrical connection.
Sitting between Forsythe and Robbins is Stephanie Lake’s world premiere titled Seven Days. This short piece is set to a whimsical homage to the Goldberg Variations crafted by company pianist Peter Brikmanis. Lake’s choreography adds a fresh perspective to the evening, enriching the diverse offerings of the program.
The Australian Ballet’s presentation of these three works not only highlights the artistic prowess of its dancers but also serves as a testament to the innovative spirit of contemporary dance. With performances running until early October, audiences have a unique opportunity to experience a spectrum of movement that is both engaging and thought-provoking.
