Billy Porter Launches Black Mona Lisa, Aims for Fashion Empire

Billy Porter has officially entered the beauty industry with the launch of his cosmetics line, Black Mona Lisa, named after his song released in 2023. The 55-year-old singer and actor aims to expand his influence by creating a comprehensive fashion and beauty empire. The new line includes a variety of products such as cleansers, serums, eye shimmers, and lipsticks, marking the beginning of a broader business venture.

In an interview with WWD, Porter expressed his vision for Black Mona Lisa, stating, “To me, Black Mona Lisa is ever-present. It’s classic forever and doesn’t go out of style.” He elaborated on his plans to extend the brand to include clothing, shoes, and even cookware. His ambition reflects a desire to create a lifestyle brand that resonates deeply with consumers.

Porter emphasized the importance of self-expression in beauty. He believes that the brand should liberate individuals from traditional makeup rules, saying, “What I’ve learned from being out with my younger friends is that there are no letters; there are no rules. It’s freeing and it’s fun; it’s authentic.” He aims for Black Mona Lisa to embody his authentic self, which he describes as an ever-evolving journey.

Despite his vibrant public persona, Porter identifies as an introvert. He acknowledged this duality in a conversation with Town and Country, stating, “You wouldn’t know it but … I’m an introvert. I know how to be an extrovert because my job requires it.” This insight into his personality adds depth to his public image, revealing a more introspective side.

Porter also shared that his recent experience performing in the West End revival of Cabaret has been transformative. He described his time in London as “really healing,” appreciating the city’s inclusive culture and vibrant arts scene. He remarked, “I love the people, the architecture. I love how art is still for everyone,” highlighting the accessibility of creativity in the UK capital.

His reflections on fashion and cultural acceptance in London also resonated with his vision for Black Mona Lisa. Porter praised the city’s open-minded approach to fashion, stating that it is “fun and not muted by masculine tropes.” He also mentioned the positive attitudes towards sexuality in London, which he finds healing and affirming.

With the launch of Black Mona Lisa, Porter is not just entering the beauty market; he is setting the stage for a broader cultural conversation about identity, creativity, and self-acceptance. His journey from stage to the beauty industry illustrates his commitment to redefining norms and empowering others to express their true selves. As Porter embarks on this new chapter, many will be watching to see how he continues to shape both the fashion and beauty landscapes.
