The annual Mount Gambier Spring Show welcomed approximately 11,500 visitors over the weekend, showcasing a vibrant mix of entertainment and community spirit. Despite challenging weather conditions on Saturday, which included heavy rain, attendees turned out in droves, demonstrating their enthusiasm for the event.
Kerry Hill, president of the Mount Gambier Spring Show, noted that attendance on Friday was particularly strong, likely due to favorable weather and a local student free day. “We had a perfect day Friday weather wise and then unfortunately on Saturday the heavens opened,” she stated. Hill expressed satisfaction with the overall turnout, emphasizing that the patrons remained undeterred by the inclement weather. “We were very lucky; the patrons certainly wanted to come to the show, and we were not down very much at all for the gate figure on Saturday.”
Community Engagement and Activities
The show featured a range of activities appealing to families and individuals alike. Highlights included a log chop competition showcasing some of South Australia’s top axemen, with Rob Bast, a renowned wood sculptor, demonstrating his skills. Hill remarked on the diversity of the entertainment, which continued even under cover, allowing guests to enjoy various performances and competitions despite the rain.
Children had ample opportunities for free fun, with attractions such as a mechanical bull, a Rev it Up racing simulator, and face painting. “Once they came in the gate, families were really impressed with the amount of things their kids could do without having to pay,” Hill noted. She emphasized the importance of making the show accessible for families, stating, “We just want to make sure that families can afford to come to the show.”
The event also showcased competitions featuring horses, cattle, sheep, and dogs, alongside indoor exhibits. Approximately 70 stallholders participated, offering a variety of products and services, including a caravan display and representations from local car clubs and industrial businesses.
Looking Ahead
Hill expressed gratitude towards the committee and volunteers who contributed to the event’s success, while also highlighting a continuous need for more volunteers in future shows. The Mount Gambier Spring Show remains a cornerstone of community engagement, fostering connections among local residents and visitors.
Overall, despite the unpredictable weather, the weekend proved to be a resounding success, allowing the Mount Gambier community to come together in celebration and enjoyment. Hill concluded, “People from Mount Gambier and surrounding districts got an absolutely great weekend.”
