Avalon Baptist Church Excluded from NSW Baptist Association Over Marriage Views

The Avalon Baptist Peace Church has been officially disaffiliated from the NSW/ACT Baptist Association due to its acceptance of marriage equality. This decision, announced on November 8, 2023, also affects Seaforth Baptist Church, both located on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. The disaffiliation reflects a growing divide within Baptist communities regarding views on marriage equality.

The NSW/ACT Baptist Association voted to remove the affiliation of Avalon Baptist and Seaforth Baptist, following similar actions against the Canberra and Hamilton Baptist churches over the past year. These decisions highlight a broader trend of exclusion based on differing theological interpretations.

Dr. Sally Longley, Pastor of Avalon Baptist, expressed her deep sadness over the association’s ruling. “We acknowledge the NSW/ACT Baptist Association decision with deep sadness,” she stated. Dr. Longley respects the association’s stance, but she described it as unwelcoming and inconsistent with biblical teachings.

She emphasized Avalon Baptist’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “Avalon Baptist embraces people with different views, including different views on marriage and marriage equality.” Dr. Longley criticized the association for lacking the maturity to maintain fellowship amidst differing opinions, suggesting that such an approach is necessary in the current climate of polarization and social division.

Avalon Baptist aims to create a welcoming environment for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or beliefs. “We celebrate and rejoice in God’s great diversity,” Dr. Longley said, adding that the church strives to provide a genuinely safe space for LGBTQI individuals.

The church plans to transition its membership to the newly formed Open Baptists, which advocates for inclusivity regarding marriage equality and encourages open dialogue on differing views. Dr. Longley noted, “We will continue to pray for the Association” as the church embraces this new direction.

Supporting her, Brad Dalton, Secretary and Deacon of Avalon Baptist, highlighted the importance of being welcoming to all followers of Christ. “There are many faithful followers of Jesus who are LGBTQI, and many have family members who identify as such,” he noted, reinforcing the church’s commitment to inclusivity.

Avalon Baptist continues to serve its congregation and the broader community with love and acceptance, standing firm in its faith while promoting a message of unity and respect.
