A new initiative has been launched at Monash University to create greener and more sustainable practices in steel production. The ARC Research Hub for Smart Process Design and Control aims to address the significant environmental impact of steel manufacturing, which is responsible for approximately eight percent of global CO2 emissions.
The Hub unites researchers from prestigious institutions, including Macquarie University, University of Queensland, UNSW, and Western Sydney University. Collaborating with industry partners such as Rio Tinto, Baowu Steel, and China Steel Corporation, the initiative focuses on developing innovative, low-emission steelmaking processes.
Professor Sankar Bhattacharya, the Hub Director and a member of Monash University’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, emphasized the significance of this initiative. “This Hub will create smarter, cleaner, and more efficient steelmaking processes,” he stated. “By combining simulation, AI, and industrial testing, we can transform one of the world’s most critical industries to utilize diverse Australian ore while maintaining Australia’s leadership in sustainable innovation.”
The Hub also aims to cultivate the next generation of engineers and researchers, equipping them to lead Australia’s transition towards a low-emission industrial economy. Steel production is vital to Australia’s economy, contributing 18-20 percent of the nation’s export income through iron ore exports. By making steelmaking more sustainable, the Hub aspires to enhance Australia’s competitiveness in the global steel supply chain.
Monash University researchers have a proven track record in advancing low-carbon industrial technologies. To mark the opening of the Hub, the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering hosted an international conference from November 29 to December 1, 2023. The event featured over 100 presentations from experts in Australia, China, and Korea, highlighting the collaborative efforts in promoting sustainable practices in the steel industry.
The establishment of the ARC Research Hub represents a significant step towards addressing urgent climate challenges while ensuring the resilience of Australia’s iron ore sector. By fostering partnerships between academia and industry, the initiative not only aims to reduce emissions but also strengthens the foundation for future advancements in sustainable steel production.
