Donations of blankets, bedding, and warm clothing have significantly bolstered the efforts of ac.care in assisting vulnerable individuals in the Limestone Coast during the winter months. Contributions from community groups, businesses, schools, and local residents played a vital role in meeting the increasing demand for support at ac.care’s community centres located in Mount Gambier and Millicent.
The annual Triple M 90.5 and SAFM 96.1FM Limestone Coast Blankets and Winter Warmer Appeal received an enthusiastic response from the community. Local residents rallied to provide comfort for those in need during harsh winter conditions. “We are thankful the community heard and answered the call to support our most vulnerable people,” said Ewan Grant, breakfast announcer for Triple M 90.5. He added that the inherent goodness of the community continues to shine, with hopes that this spirit of support will grow.
Community Contributions Make a Difference
Support for the appeal came from various sources, including Park Dry Cleaners, which served as a drop-off point for donations that were subsequently delivered to ac.care. The organization’s homelessness and community services manager, Trish Spark, noted that the number of individuals seeking assistance has consistently increased. She expressed gratitude for the community’s contributions, emphasizing their impact during winter’s colder months.
“The colder, wetter, and shorter days of winter can intensify the challenges faced by individuals experiencing hardship as they try to stay warm, manage utility costs, and access transport,” Ms. Spark explained. “Every donation makes an impact and helps provide immediate comfort while our dedicated team addresses other challenges.”
In addition to the blanket appeal, staff from the ac.care Limestone Coast homelessness service have been actively engaging with the community. They conducted their annual beanie drop in public spaces around Mount Gambier to offer further support. Contributions also flowed in from organizations such as the Lions Club of Mount Gambier, South East Property Sales and Management, and the Beachport Friends of ac.care.
The recent Limestone Coast Support Homeless People Luncheon raised $135,000 to combat homelessness in the region. This event not only provided vital funding but also inspired additional business initiatives aimed at addressing local challenges. Ms. Spark remarked, “Homelessness is everybody’s business, and we are fortunate to live in a community that is prepared to be a part of the solution. Achieving meaningful change will require a collaborative effort from governments, business, and the broader community.”
Ongoing Support Needed
Although the winter appeal has concluded, ac.care continues to accept donations of new or gently used clothing, non-perishable food items, household goods, and other essentials at their facilities. For those in need of support, further information can be found by visiting accare.org.au or by calling 1300 ACCARE (1300 222 273).
