The City of Greater Geelong is set to host an event on December 3, 2023, to mark the International Day of People with Disability. The gathering aims to recognize and celebrate the valuable contributions of residents living with disabilities. Taking place at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, the event will feature the announcement of the People with Disability Awards, highlighting local achievements and recent accessibility improvements in the city.
The event is a collaborative effort, co-designed with input from six community members who have firsthand experience with disabilities. Supporting partners, including the Rights Information and Advocacy Centre (RIAC) and VALiD, will also be involved in the celebration. Geelong Stretch Kontelj, a local advocate, emphasized the significance of this occasion in promoting community awareness and inclusion.
“About 22 percent of Greater Geelong’s population lives with a disability – that’s around 55,000 people,” Kontelj stated. He highlighted the diverse ways in which community members contribute, including in the arts, culture, workforce participation, volunteering, and caregiving. Kontelj expressed enthusiasm for celebrating the contributions of award nominees, residents with disabilities, and their allies at the upcoming event.
The awards will recognize four categories: Achievement, Leadership and Advocacy, Volunteering, and Inclusive Business, with a total of 19 nominees competing for these honors.
Cr Anthony Aitken, who chairs the council’s Disability Access and Inclusion portfolio, stressed that the awards play a vital role in fostering a stronger and more connected community in Geelong. “Our free event will celebrate Geelong Awards for People with Disability nominees who are doing outstanding work in advocacy, leadership, empowering others, volunteering, at work or in the community,” Aitken said.
The event will commence at 17:30, with food and refreshments provided for attendees. The City of Greater Geelong invites the public to join in this important celebration, enhancing understanding and appreciation for individuals with disabilities in the region.
