Shirley Humble, the first female councillor of Nannup, Australia, has passed away at the age of 96. Born on September 28, 1929, Mrs. Humble died on November 19, 2023, leaving behind a significant legacy in her community. Her contributions to local governance and her role as a mentor have left a lasting impact on those who knew her.
Community Tributes to a Local Leader
Vicki Hansen, the deputy president of the Shire of Nannup, described Mrs. Humble as a “local legend.” During a council meeting held last month, Cr. Hansen paid tribute to her, saying, “I always called her Mrs. Humble because she elicited respect from everyone who knew her. She was a long-serving member of the Nannup community — involved and caring.”
Mrs. Humble served on the shire council from 1971 to 1983, breaking barriers as the first woman in that position. Her dedication to public service is commemorated through the Shirley Humble Room, which is named in her honour at the shire’s offices. This gesture reflects her importance in shaping the community’s governance and her enduring influence.
A Legacy of Mentorship and Community Service
In addition to her role as a councillor, Mrs. Humble was a long-serving justice of the peace. Cr. Hansen emphasized her role as a mentor, particularly to younger justices of the peace in Nannup. “She always measured her words before speaking, and I, like many in Nannup, held her in the highest esteem,” Hansen remarked.
Mrs. Humble’s commitment to the community extended beyond her official roles. Many residents remember her as a figure of warmth and wisdom, someone who made a concerted effort to engage with the people of Nannup. Cr. Hansen recounted a recent visit with Mrs. Humble earlier this year, where Mrs. Humble expressed her deep connection to the town, stating that she always considered Nannup her home.
In remembering her, Cr. Hansen concluded, “May we treasure her memory,” highlighting the profound impact Mrs. Humble had on the lives of those around her. Her passing marks the end of an era for Nannup, but her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
