Residents Invited to Nominate Local Heroes for Australia Day Awards

Residents of the Grant District Council are encouraged to recognize their local heroes by nominating individuals who are making a significant impact in the community for the 2026 Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award. The council’s initiative aims to highlight the contributions of those who work tirelessly in various sectors, including education, health, environment, business, sport, arts, and community services.

Kylie Boston, the Mayor of Grant District, emphasized the importance of acknowledging those who positively influence the community. “The awards are our chance to shine a spotlight on those who go above and beyond, making our community a strong and vibrant place to live, work, and play,” she stated.

Nominations are open in several categories: Young Citizen of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, and Active Citizenship. Mayor Boston urged residents to participate, saying, “If you know a person, group, or event that has made a real difference in our community, nominating them is a great way to recognize their efforts and say thank you.”

Reflecting on her experience as this year’s recipient of the Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award, Jacqui Doloughan expressed her gratitude. “I’m deeply honoured and very humbled to be recognized,” Mrs. Doloughan remarked. She highlighted the significance of community engagement, stating, “Volunteering within my local community gets me out and about and provides an opportunity to give back to the community that has welcomed and supported me.”

She further elaborated on the impact of community involvement, saying, “This award is a reminder of the power of community and the impact we can make when we come together with a shared purpose.” Doloughan also celebrated the collective efforts of countless individuals who contribute their time and resources to improve their surroundings.

The award ceremony will take place on January 26, 2024, where nominees and winners will be honored and presented with certificates at a private event. The deadline for nominations is November 16, 2023. Submissions can be made online, and hard copy nomination forms along with guidelines are available at the council’s principal office, the Port MacDonnell Community Complex, and on the council’s website.

This initiative not only recognizes individual achievements but also fosters a sense of community spirit and encourages ongoing participation in local activities. Residents are urged to take this opportunity to celebrate those who enhance the quality of life within the Grant District.
