Rural Aid Celebrates Spirit of the Bush with Photography Winners

On September 17, 2025, Rural Aid announced the winners of its sixth annual Spirit of the Bush Photography Competition. This initiative highlights the resilience and community spirit that characterize rural Australia. This year’s competition attracted an unprecedented 201 entrants, who submitted 429 photographs, nearly double the number received in 2024.

The ten winning images were selected for their storytelling ability, reflecting the realities of rural life, including its challenges and triumphs. Each winner received a $250 prepaid Visa card in recognition of their work. Rural Aid CEO John Warlters emphasized the competition’s role in showcasing often-overlooked narratives. “This year’s photos are a moving tribute to life outside the city limits,” Mr. Warlters stated. “They tell stories of perseverance, pride, and connection.”

Among the notable winners, Amy Ahchay from Calliope, Queensland, captivated the judges with a candid photograph of countrymen Rob and Gordon sharing a light-hearted moment over a cup of tea in the paddock. “It’s a moment that sums up life in the bush,” Ahchay reflected. “Tough on the outside, but grounded in warmth, humour, and mateship.” Her first-time entry was both a personal achievement and a celebration of the untold stories of rural Australia.

The winning photographs will be featured in various Rural Aid campaigns, publications, and social media platforms to raise awareness of rural life and the people who inhabit these areas. In addition, Rural Aid encourages photographers to contribute further by donating their images, which are vital for the charity’s fundraising and outreach efforts.
