UK Court Drops Attempted Murder Charges in Stabbing Case

Authorities in the United Kingdom have decided to drop attempted murder charges against Ioan-Alexandru Pintaru, a 33-year-old man who stabbed an 11-year-old Australian girl in a random attack in London last year. The incident occurred on August 12, 2022, in the bustling Leicester Square area, where the girl, who was on holiday with her mother, was attacked while visiting a TWG Tea store.

Pintaru, a Romanian national, had previously pleaded guilty to wounding with intent. Prosecutors reported that he placed the young girl in a headlock and stabbed her multiple times, specifically eight times across her body. Fortunately, the girl, hailing from New South Wales, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and underwent plastic surgery shortly after the assault.

Charges Adjusted Following Psychiatric Evaluation

Pintaru’s trial, which was set to begin this week, was halted after psychiatric evaluations indicated that his mental state at the time of the attack would prevent a conviction for attempted murder. A spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized, “Our thoughts remain with the victim and family affected by the horrendous actions of Ioan Pintaru — who remains criminally responsible and will be sentenced accordingly.”

The spokesperson added that the decision to accept Pintaru’s guilty plea to wounding with intent was made after a thorough review of evidence provided by two independent psychiatrists. The expert evaluations concluded that the prosecution could not establish that Pintaru specifically intended to kill, which is a critical requirement for an attempted murder charge.

Bravery Recognized and Sentencing Scheduled

In a remarkable display of courage, a security guard intervened during the attack, tackling Pintaru and rescuing the girl. This act of bravery has drawn public admiration and recognition.

Pintaru, who does not have a fixed address, is scheduled to be sentenced at London’s Central Criminal Court, commonly known as the Old Bailey, on December 17, 2023. During this time, the court will consider the full impact of his actions and the circumstances surrounding them.

As the case concludes, the affected family continues to receive support from the Crown Prosecution Service, illustrating a commitment to assist those impacted by violent crime. The community remains vigilant as they reflect on the tragic events that unfolded in Leicester Square.
