New Schools Break Ground in Googong as Construction Begins

Families in Googong, New South Wales, will soon have access to a new public primary school and preschool, complementing the construction of a new high school. This initiative is part of the Minns Labor Government‘s strategy to enhance public education and accommodate the needs of rapidly growing communities. The new facilities aim to ensure that families receive access to high-quality educational infrastructure.

Construction on the new high school has now commenced, with plans for it to open on January 30, 2027. The high school will be designed to serve up to 2,000 students, initially accommodating around 700. The campus will feature 26 modern classrooms, three support classrooms, a multipurpose hall with a canteen, a library, sports courts, and specialist classrooms for subjects such as science, performing arts, and hospitality. Additional facilities will include workshops for wood and metal, a sports field, and an agricultural plot.

The primary school, scheduled for completion in 2028, will cater to more than 650 students and will include 28 classrooms, three support classrooms, a hall, and sports courts. Additionally, the preschool will provide care for up to 120 children each week. This new primary school will be the second in Googong, following the opening of Googong Public School in 2023.

The decision to establish a new primary school, rather than expanding the existing one, reflects the rapid growth of student enrolment in the area. With this development, local families will benefit from increased classroom availability, ensuring future access to high-quality public education.

These projects are part of a broader initiative in the Monaro region, with substantial investments in educational infrastructure. The 2025-26 Budget allocates $2.1 billion for new and upgraded schools throughout regional New South Wales. Such investments aim to provide families in emerging communities with the educational resources they deserve.

In addition to constructing new schools, the Minns Labor Government has made strides in addressing teacher shortages. Since taking office, teacher vacancies have decreased by 61 percent, and the number of canceled classes has nearly halved.

Steve Whan, the Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education and Member for Monaro, expressed enthusiasm about the new facilities. “I am thrilled to announce the new preschool and primary school for the growing Googong community,” he stated during the groundbreaking event for the high school. Whan emphasized the importance of responding to local parents’ needs for educational infrastructure that aligns with community growth.

Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos echoed this sentiment, highlighting the convenience of co-locating the new school and preschool alongside the high school. “As communities grow, the Minns Labor Government is focused on delivering the vital infrastructure they need to thrive,” she remarked.

Principal of Googong Public School, Rebekah Lindsay, shared her excitement about the new high school, noting that it will continue to provide the quality education currently available at Karabar High School. She expressed optimism that the new facility would support students in both academic and personal development.

With the new primary school and preschool set to enhance educational opportunities in Googong, families can look forward to a future where their children will have access to quality public education close to home.
