Construction of the new Sydney Fish Market has officially concluded, marking a significant milestone for one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken on Sydney Harbour. The keys have been handed over to Sydney Fish Market Pty Ltd, which will now focus on completing the fit-outs ahead of the grand opening scheduled for January 19, 2026.
This state-of-the-art facility is designed to become an iconic addition to Sydney’s waterfront, joining the ranks of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. The new market, which extends over water, showcases world-class engineering and sustainability practices. It is projected to attract over 6 million visitors annually, offering them an immersive experience, including live fish auctions visible through the building’s stunning glass facade.
The structure is supported by 481 marine piles and incorporates 6,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement. Its roof features over 400 roof cassettes and 594 glulam timber beams, all transported by barge from Glebe Island. The design prioritizes sustainability, eliminating more than 5,650 truck movements on local roads. It captures rainwater for recycling, harnesses solar energy for self-sufficiency, and can be illuminated with multi-coloured LEDs for special events.
Community and Cultural Integration
The new market will not only serve as a commercial hub but also as a cultural landmark. It will feature more than 6,000 square metres of accessible public space. Cultural storytelling is woven into the Civic Plaza, including five creative installations that pay tribute to the area’s First Nations heritage and its industrial history. Additionally, marine life in Blackwattle Bay will be supported by the installation of seawall tiles, coral panels, and hanging fish habitats beneath the building.
The construction process created over 700 jobs, with the new facility expected to sustain the same number of ongoing roles. Approximately $670 million in contracts were awarded to Australian businesses during the project, demonstrating a robust commitment to local economic growth.
Exciting Retail and Dining Options
The retail space in the new Sydney Fish Market will be double the size of the current facility, featuring a mix of local seafood traders, specialty food retailers, and diverse dining options. Visitors can look forward to everything from casual takeaway to premium waterfront restaurants. Notable chefs, including Luke Nguyen and Toru Ryu, have confirmed their participation in the market, while Sushi Oe and GetSashimi are set to make a splash with their innovative offerings.
NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Today’s milestone is an opportunity to reflect on all the hard work that has gone into completing this magnificent building on Sydney’s harbour foreshore.” He emphasized the economic benefits expected from the new market, which aims to attract millions of visitors each year.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully added that retailers are currently finalizing their spaces to ensure a vibrant experience for visitors when it opens. He highlighted the market’s potential to be a lively hub showcasing fresh and cooked seafood.
David Ghannoum, Multiplex ACT/NSW Regional Managing Director, noted the complexity of the construction, which included a watertight basement carpark built four metres below sea level and the largest glulam timber roof in the Southern Hemisphere. He commended the collaboration and resilience of the project team, which utilized renewable resources and environmentally friendly practices throughout the construction process.
