The iconic Station Pier in Victoria has reopened to the public for the first time since 2020, following the completion of extensive maintenance activities. This development, announced by Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne, aims to ensure the facility’s operational integrity for years to come, supporting the arrival of approximately 50,000 passengers and crew annually.
The reopening allows local communities, tourists, and recreational fishers to enjoy the pier during weekends and public holidays throughout the summer. Access will be permitted during daylight hours when there are no ships docked at the facility. The maintenance program is designed to allow continued work during weekdays, ensuring that Station Pier remains functional for the cruise industry.
Maintenance Enhancements and Community Access
The comprehensive maintenance efforts included refurbishing the pier’s Gatehouse, structural pylons, electrical systems, corrosion protection, and the wharf deck. While pedestrian access will be primarily limited to a central pathway leading to the southern end of the pier, there will also be an accessible vehicle entry point at this location.
Minister Horne emphasized the importance of these upgrades, stating, “These vital works will come as welcome news for Victorians, particularly the community and recreational fishers eager to enjoy what the pier has to offer.” Member for Albert Park Nina Taylor added, “Station Pier is a great asset for the local community and recreational fishers, attracting locals and tourists to this beautiful part of Victoria.”
Future Planning for Station Pier
The Allan Labor Government is collaborating with relevant departments and agencies to plan for the future of Station Pier. The goal is to preserve the pier’s iconic status while accommodating the growing demands of the cruise shipping industry. The pier features active shipping berths, two terminal buildings, a gatehouse, a former railway station building, and a small kiosk.
As the summer season approaches, the reopening of Station Pier signifies a positive step for the local community, providing opportunities for leisure and tourism while safeguarding the facility’s heritage and operational needs.
