Victoria Invests $24 Million to Maintain West Gate Bridge

The Allan Labor Government is launching a significant maintenance initiative for the iconic West Gate Bridge, ensuring its structural integrity for the future. This program, supported by $24 million allocated in the 2025/26 Victorian Budget, aims to enhance the safety and functionality of the bridge, which accommodates more than 205,000 vehicles daily.

A dedicated team of 15 experts will conduct year-round maintenance activities on the bridge. Their responsibilities include comprehensive inspections of critical structures, resurfacing the road with asphalt, and applying protective coatings on concrete piers. This proactive approach is designed to minimize the need for unplanned closures, thereby reducing disruptions for the 205,000 vehicles that rely on this vital transport link.

Impact on Traffic and Freight Services

The West Gate Bridge plays a crucial role in supporting Victoria’s freight, tourism, and shipping industries. Currently, around 30,000 freight vehicles traverse the bridge each day, with load capacities increasing from 25 tonnes to over 68 tonnes. Since its opening in 1978, the daily traffic volume has surged from 40,000 vehicles to its current figures, illustrating the bridge’s growing importance in the state’s transport infrastructure.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne emphasized the bridge’s significance, stating, “As the West Gate Bridge reaches its 47th year of service, it continues to serve as a lifeline for our freight, tourism, and port industries, and an essential part of the state’s transport network.” Horne further highlighted the government’s commitment to maintaining this Victorian icon, ensuring it remains robust for future generations.

In conjunction with these maintenance efforts, the West Gate Tunnel Project aims to alleviate local road congestion by providing an alternative route for heavy vehicles, further enhancing transport efficiency across the region.

The ongoing investment in the West Gate Bridge is not just about preserving a structure; it is about sustaining a critical artery for the economy and daily life in Victoria. As maintenance progresses, the government reinforces its commitment to keeping this vital infrastructure in excellent condition for years to come.
