Young Aboriginal people in care are experiencing significant personal growth and development through a new Therapeutic Residential Care program in Australia. This initiative, operating across the State’s 27 metropolitan and regional Therapeutic Residential Care Houses, offers young people opportunities to engage in diverse sporting and recreational activities. From mountain biking and hiking to fishing and basketball, these programs aim to foster skills, confidence, and self-worth among participants.
Steve, the Recreation Coordinator for the Department of Communities, has dedicated the past 14 years to creating school holiday camps that encourage young people to connect with community sports. His approach particularly focuses on young Aboriginal individuals in care, using sport as a tool for engagement and empowerment.
Building Connections and Confidence
Steve’s background spans the sporting, local government, and leadership sectors, which informs his unique perspective on therapeutic care. While he acknowledges the trauma that many young people face, he emphasizes that it does not have to dictate their future. “For me, it’s about giving them freedom to be themselves, make mistakes, and learn from those mistakes,” he said.
His efforts have led to the establishment of strong relationships with Aboriginal organisations, which play a crucial role in mentoring young Aboriginal individuals. Steve believes that fostering a connection to culture is essential. “We need to work together to ensure young Aboriginal people in the care system are connected with their culture and community,” he stated, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in preserving cultural identity.
Earlier in 2023, Steve was honored with the Excellence in Education and Training Award at the Department’s 2025 Achiever Awards. This recognition acknowledges his innovative cultural camps, which go beyond mere engagement, allowing participants to uncover their talents and develop a profound sense of belonging. The young men’s cultural camp program has recently expanded to include girls-only camps, developed and run by female Aboriginal staff and Elders.
Enhancing Futures Through Education
In addition to sporting activities, Steve actively connects young people in Therapeutic Residential Care Houses with educational and training opportunities. This aspect of the program aims to enhance their personal development and improve future employment prospects.
The impact of the Therapeutic Residential Care program is evident in the lives of the young individuals involved. By integrating sport and cultural connection into their care, the initiative is not only promoting personal growth but also helping to build a stronger sense of community among young Aboriginal people. This forward-thinking approach demonstrates the potential for positive change within the care system, paving the way for a brighter future for these young people.
