Australians Face Holiday Stress Amid Rising Living Costs

New research reveals that a significant number of Australians are experiencing stress this Christmas due to ongoing financial pressures. After three years of soaring inflation affecting essential costs, including food, housing, and energy, households are feeling the strain. According to a survey commissioned by IGA, approximately 87% of Australians are concerned about their expenses this festive season.

Financial Pressures Impact Holiday Planning

As inflation continues to influence costs, many are seeking ways to reduce their spending. IGA spokesperson Heather Howell noted that 68% of Australians are actively looking for strategies to save on groceries, especially as they navigate increased electricity and petrol prices. Howell emphasized that while families want to create a memorable holiday experience, they are also prioritizing financial prudence.

“Christmas is really just a continuation of that and really looking at what you can cut back,” Howell said. “You want to impress your guests and entertain, but people are being smarter about how they do it because Christmas doesn’t have to cost the earth.” Howell advocates for a festive experience that remains enjoyable without overwhelming financial burdens.

Smart Shopping Strategies for the Festive Season

Savvy shoppers are turning to home brands to manage their budgets effectively. Howell suggested that purchasing home brand products can lead to significant savings, particularly when buying staples like flour, sugar, and mixed fruit for baking. “If you’re buying ingredients for Christmas, there isn’t any real reason to buy more expensive products,” she stated.

Many Australians are also taking time to compare prices across various supermarkets, ensuring they find the best deals. Howell highlighted that simplifying holiday menus and choosing ingredients that can be utilized in multiple dishes have become popular strategies to save both time and money. For instance, opting for a frozen cheesecake or a pavlova base reduces baking time while also cutting costs.

Planning Christmas menus early can help avoid last-minute overspending. Howell encourages families to come together and make informed choices to keep expenses manageable without sacrificing the joy of the season. “You don’t have to spend the earth to have an amazing Christmas,” she concluded.

As the festive season approaches, Australians are demonstrating resilience and resourcefulness in their holiday preparations, striving to maintain the spirit of Christmas while navigating financial challenges.
