Geelong Football Club has extended the contract of defender Lawson Humphries, securing his services until at least the end of the 2028 season. Originally contracted for the upcoming year, Humphries has now signed a further two-year deal, affirming his commitment to the club and its future at Kardinia Park.
Executive General Manager of Football Andrew Mackie expressed the club’s satisfaction in extending Humphries’ contract. “Lawson has become an integral part of our football club in such a short period of time, and we are pleased to retain him until at least the end of 2028,” Mackie stated. He highlighted Humphries’ dual contributions, noting, “Since arriving at Geelong, we’ve all seen Lawson’s on-field ability which is matched by his brilliant character off the field.”
Humphries, a product of Western Australia, joined Geelong in 2023 after being selected with pick 63 in the national draft. His journey has been marked by rapid development and significant contributions to the team. After a strong start with Geelong’s VFL side in the first half of the 2024 season, Humphries made his AFL debut in round 16. He continued to impress, playing in the Cats’ last 11 games of the 2024 season, including two finals.
As the team prepares for the 2026 AFL season, Humphries has returned to pre-season training with the full squad. His performance in 2025 further solidified his position within the team; he missed only one game and played crucial roles throughout the season. Humphries averaged 16.2 disposals per match, leading the Cats in total rebounds while also contributing with four goals.
The extension of Humphries’ contract signals Geelong’s commitment to building a strong defensive unit as they look to improve upon their previous seasons. As the club gears up for the upcoming AFL campaign, the focus will be on leveraging the skills and character of players like Humphries, who have proven themselves to be vital assets.
