Henty young footballer Jordan Klemke has made headlines by winning the prestigious best and fairest award for the second consecutive year. Klemke secured an impressive 147 votes, significantly outpacing his nearest competitors, Fletcher Macreadie with 90 votes and Tom Newton with 82 votes, during the annual presentation night held over the weekend.
At just 19 years old, Klemke is in his second year of senior football, having previously played a pivotal role in securing the Henty Swampies‘ thirds flag in 2023. His achievement mirrors that of his father, Matt Klemke, who also won the same award as an 18-year-old in his debut senior year. Interestingly, Matt was the runner-up on four additional occasions, showcasing a legacy of talent within the Klemke family.
Reflecting on his victory, Klemke expressed a sense of pride and humor regarding the family rivalry. “Dad won the best and fairest in his first year of senior footy with Henty, so I have been stirring him up that I’ve won it more than him now,” he remarked. “But it does feel pretty special to win the award again and I’m lucky, I guess.”
Klemke’s versatility on the field has been a significant asset. Last season, he primarily played as a half-back and occasionally as a forward. This year, under the guidance of coach Brenden Maclean, he transitioned into a midfield role, which he embraced enthusiastically. “I feel like I had a better season this year and spent a lot more time in the midfield,” Klemke noted. “I just felt that I was a lot more consistent this season.”
With the departure of key player Sam Scott, Klemke’s move into the midfield filled a crucial gap. He has experience playing in that position from his junior football days, making the transition smoother. His appreciation for Maclean’s coaching style is evident. “Macca has been unreal for us younger players,” he stated, recognizing the support he received throughout the season.
Maclean praised Klemke’s dedication and adaptability, saying, “History says not many blokes win two best and fairests, let alone in your first two years of senior football. He has been dominating for us.” The coach underlined Klemke’s capacity to perform in various positions, whether in defense or midfield, and highlighted his ability to read the game effectively.
As Klemke looks forward to the next season, he has set his sights on enhancing his physical strength. “I’m trying to get to the gym as often as I can to add a bit more muscle. My playing weight was 75 kg, but since the season has finished, I’m up to 80 kg,” he explained. His determination to improve stems from his experiences in the midfield, where he felt he was pushed around at times.
Klemke’s remarkable journey in senior football has only just begun, but his accomplishments thus far suggest a bright future ahead. With the support of his coaches and teammates, he aims to continue evolving and making an impact on the field. As he prepares for the upcoming season, the football community will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how this young talent develops.
