No. 5 LSU achieved a historic milestone in women’s basketball on November 17, 2023, by scoring over 100 points for the seventh consecutive game. The Tigers showcased their dominance by defeating Marist College 113-53 in the semifinal of the Reef Division at the Paradise Jam tournament held in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands.
This remarkable performance broke the previous NCAA record of six straight 100-point games, a record that had stood for 43 years. The record was initially set by the 1982 Louisiana Tech team, which went on to win the inaugural NCAA women’s championship. Notably, that team was led by All-American point guard Kim Mulkey, who later coached LSU to its own NCAA title in 2023.
Dominant Performance by LSU
The Tigers, now holding a perfect record of 7-0, displayed their scoring prowess with a balance of offense and teamwork. Seven players finished the game in double figures, with ZaKiyah Johnson leading the way with 19 points. Additionally, reserve player Kate Koval contributed significantly with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Flau’Jae Johnson and Amiya Joyner each added 16 points, while MiLaysia Fulwiley, Grace Knox, and Jada Richard chipped in with 11 points apiece. Marist’s Justine Henry stood out for the Red Foxes, scoring a game-best 21 points, while Lexie Tarul added 11 points to the effort.
The record-breaking basket came from Flau’Jae Johnson, who scored a layup with just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 101-40. Head coach Kim Mulkey utilized her entire roster, allowing all 11 players to contribute to the scoreboard. LSU shot an impressive 53% from the field and converted 15 of 18 free throws during the game.
Looking Ahead for LSU
Fans and analysts alike will be eager to see if LSU can maintain this pace and extend their record as they move forward in the tournament and into the regular season.
