Tokyo Science Initiative Connects Cyberspace and Reality for Society

Science Tokyo has launched the Visionary Initiatives (VIs), an integrated research framework aimed at fostering societal transformation through advancements in science and technology. Officially initiated in the 2025 academic year, the program seeks to co-create new value by connecting cyberspace with the physical world. Currently, six distinct VIs are at work, each focusing on one of three key pillars: “Better Life,” “Better Society,” and “Better Planet.”

Connecting Cyberspace and the Physical World

In a recent discussion, Professor Kei Sakaguchi, a leading figure from the School of Engineering and Program Director of the VI Innovative-Life Society, emphasized the importance of integrating these two realms. He believes that this connection can significantly contribute to creating a more vibrant society. The vision set forth not only aims to advance technology but also to enhance human wellbeing by addressing societal challenges through scientific innovation.

Professor Sakaguchi points out that the impact of research varies depending on the field and its stage of development. While the benefits of fundamental research may not always be immediately visible to the public, applied fields like telecommunications show more tangible outcomes. His work focuses on designing communication infrastructures that interlink cyberspace—encompassing the internet and telecommunications networks—with societal needs.

The emergence of 5G technology stands as a testament to this progress. Professor Sakaguchi notes that while many people believe they are already experiencing the full advantages of 5G, such as near real-time live streaming on smartphones, there is much more potential that remains untapped. He argues that the current primary interface for 5G is still the smartphone, and although telecommunications capabilities have made strides, applications and services that fully harness 5G to meet societal demands are still in their infancy.

A Roadmap for the Future

Looking ahead, Professor Sakaguchi outlines a roadmap for the future, emphasizing the need for innovation beyond existing interfaces. He asserts that to unlock the true potential of 5G, researchers and developers must create new applications and services that address real-world issues. This, he believes, will lead to significant advancements in various sectors, enhancing both individual and collective experiences.

By fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and the community, the VIs aim to inspire a new generation of researchers and innovators. The goal is to not only advance technology but also to create a societal framework that thrives on connectivity and inclusivity. Through these initiatives, Science Tokyo seeks to position itself as a leader in the global conversation about the future of science and technology.

In summary, the Visionary Initiatives represent a bold step towards interlinking cyberspace and the physical world, with the potential to transform daily life and societal structures. As Professor Sakaguchi and his team work towards developing this vision, the emphasis remains on creating practical solutions that resonate with the needs of society, paving the way for a brighter future.
