Volvo has opened orders for its latest model, the XC70 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), in China, marking the brand’s shift from the traditional station wagon to a modern SUV design. This new five-seat vehicle is set to be exported to various global markets, with potential availability in Australia. The XC70 represents a significant evolution from its predecessor, the V70 XC Cross Country, which was introduced over twenty years ago.
Earlier this year, Volvo unveiled the new XC70’s SUV body, confirming that it will be powered exclusively by a PHEV powertrain. This decision comes as Volvo adjusts its strategy following a pivot away from its goal to sell only electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030. The change reflects the growing popularity of hybrid vehicles, especially in key markets such as China and the United States.
New Features and Specifications
The XC70 will be the first vehicle to utilize Volvo’s new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA). With dimensions of 4,815 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, it will fit between Volvo’s existing XC60 and XC90 models. Although Volvo Australia has yet to confirm the XC70’s availability in local showrooms, a spokesperson indicated that the company is open to evaluating the model for right-hand drive production.
The XC70 will be manufactured in China, where Volvo also produces other models such as the XC60 and the XC40. The vehicle has been confirmed for distribution in Europe, though its availability in the United Kingdom remains uncertain due to the need for right-hand drive adaptations.
In terms of performance, the XC70 boasts an electric range of 200 km based on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), with a total range of 1,200 km. When converted to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), these figures translate to approximately 170 km and 1,020 km, respectively.
Previous filings in the Chinese market have revealed that the XC70 will feature two battery options: an entry-level 21.22 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for two-wheel drive models and a 39.63 kWh ternary lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery for all-wheel drive versions. The vehicle will also incorporate a 120 kW turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine developed in collaboration with Renault, which is already utilized in several models produced by Volvo’s parent company, Geely. This engine will work in conjunction with three electric motors, producing outputs of 60 kW, 107 kW, and 156 kW.
Interior Design and Technology
Images of the XC70’s interior have been released, showcasing a cabin that emphasizes Volvo’s commitment to its Swedish heritage. The design includes a leather-lined interior adorned with the Swedish flag integrated into the seat seams, a nod to the brand’s tradition initiated by former Volvo designer Thomas Ingenlath.
The interior features five perforated leather seats with extensive adjustment options, following Volvo’s reputation for comfort. A two-spoke steering wheel and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster complement a 15.4-inch horizontal centre touchscreen. Additionally, Volvo has confirmed a 92-inch augmented reality head-up display for an enhanced cockpit experience.
The front row includes a large centre console with various storage options and a 50W wireless smartphone charging station. Connected services, such as vehicle preconditioning, can be accessed through the Volvo Cars smartphone app. The second row features heated seats, air vents, and multiple USB-C ports, with a panoramic sunroof enhancing the cabin’s light and space.
The XC70 also includes a premium Harman Kardon sound system and a versatile 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat configuration. Safety features powered by cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors include automatic lane change assistance and automatic parking capabilities, ensuring a comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies.
As Volvo continues to modernize its lineup, the XC70 is poised to attract attention in both established and emerging markets, reflecting the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry.
