BREAKING: Albany’s junior football teams have just concluded a thrilling campaign at Football West’s junior country week, securing a silver medal and two bronze medals out of 10 teams competing. The tournament, held at the Kingsway Sporting Complex in Perth, showcased the region’s talent and resilience.
In a nail-biting final, the girls under-17 team faced off against Country Coastal but fell short in a tense penalty shootout, missing a chance to clinch their third consecutive title. After taking the lead with a goal from Amaya Dobbe in the 35th minute, Albany was unable to hold on, as Country Coastal equalized just before half-time. The shootout concluded with a 4-2 victory for Country Coastal, leaving Albany heartbreakingly close to glory.
The under-15 mixed team, however, showcased their dominance by decisively defeating Karratha 5-0 in their bronze medal playoff. Earlier in the tournament, they secured their place among the top teams by winning three matches and finishing third overall after a challenging round-robin phase.
In another impressive performance, the under-14 girls clinched bronze with a 2-1 victory over Country Coastal, thanks to a crucial own goal and a decisive strike from Makiah Suttie. The Albany contingent demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork, with Dobbe emerging as the top scorer with five goals throughout the tournament.
Coach Joe Trichilo expressed immense pride in his players, stating, “I’m so proud of them, especially the girls who took the penalties under a lot of pressure.” The emotional weight of losing key players to age restrictions next year added to the intensity of the moment. “It is always emotional to lose players for the next year; it’s sad to see but it is part of the process,” he reflected.
The under-17 mixed team faced a setback, having to forfeit their playoff against Leeuwin-Naturaliste due to injuries. Meanwhile, the under-12 girls secured a commendable fourth place in their competition. Overall, the tournament represented a milestone, celebrating its 50th year, with Albany sending a dedicated group of 150 players, 15 coaches, and 10 team managers to represent the region.
As the dust settles on this year’s tournament, Albany’s teams have not only showcased their talent but also built lasting memories and friendships. The next season promises fresh talent and new challenges as they prepare to build on this year’s achievements.
