UPDATE: Australians are poised to celebrate Halloween like never before, with total spending projected to soar to a staggering $2.32 billion from October 25 to 31, 2024. This marks a remarkable 10 percent increase compared to last year, according to ANZ Bank.
As the spooky season approaches, homes across Australia are transforming with decorative spiders, pumpkins, and fake cobwebs. The surge in consumer spending is not just about costumes; entertainment providers, retailers, and food stores are all cashing in on the festivities, making it a cross-generational event with significant retail implications.
Victorians are leading the charge, projected to spend $613 million during Halloween week, closely followed by New South Wales at $594 million. Overall, Australians are expected to splurge more than $2 billion on Halloween-related goods and services in 2024.
However, experts are raising alarms about the environmental impact of this festive frenzy. Conservation scientist Sarah Bekessy from RMIT University warns that single-use plastics used for costumes and decorations can take thousands of years to decompose, posing a severe threat to native wildlife. “No one wants a night of fun to become a lifetime of grief for our enchanting native wildlife,” Bekessy stated.
The use of artificial cobwebs presents another danger, as they can entangle insects and birds. Additionally, the light pollution from Halloween decorations can disrupt the sleep patterns of local animals.
In light of these concerns, Bekessy suggests easy, eco-friendly alternatives for Halloween enthusiasts. “Replace fake cobwebs with old sheets, cheesecloth, or woven string, and create your own costumes from second-hand items,” she advises. “And cut down on Halloween lights; it will be spookier.”
With Halloween falling on a Friday this year, participation is expected to grow, making it crucial for Australians to consider sustainable practices amidst the festive spirit. The countdown to Halloween is on, and while Australians prepare for a record-breaking celebration, the call for environmental mindfulness echoes just as loudly.
Stay tuned for more updates as the spooky festivities unfold.
