Bega Pony Club Celebrates 70 Years of Equestrian Excellence

URGENT UPDATE: The Bega Pony Club, a unique equestrian hub located under a concrete bridge in the Far South Coast of Australia, is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Since its formation on December 5, 1955, the club has produced numerous champions, including Olympian Jamie Coman and world champion harness driver Boyd Exell.

The club has become a vital breeding ground for talent, nurturing young riders and fostering a love for equestrian sports. Marie Smith, a life member and OAM, reflects on the club’s enduring legacy, describing it as a “smorgasbord of equestrian events.”

“Pony club is a great place for the little kids to get their basic skills, and then they can choose what sport they want to follow,” said the 89-year-old Smith, who has dedicated over 50 years to the club. Her proudest moments come from witnessing the transformation of young riders from tentative beginners to confident equestrians, cantering with smiles after just one year on their ponies.

The Bega Pony Club has played a crucial role in shaping the equestrian landscape of the region, offering events like showjumping, dressage, and cross-country. Smith, who was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 2010, has been instrumental in organizing activities and camps for aspiring riders.

The club’s rich history was born out of a need to elevate local riders’ skills in modern show riding and dressage. In the club’s early days, key figures including Doug Beck and Bill Howard advocated for its formation, leading to the first rally day on January 15, 1956, at the Bega Showground.

Former member Jeff “Poss” Otton, now 87, recalls how the club has been a family tradition. “All our family have gone through pony club. Now my grandkids are part of the club,” he stated, emphasizing the multi-generational impact of this community institution.

As the club looks toward the future, it stands as a beacon for young riders eager to start their equestrian journeys. The Bega Pony Club not only fosters skill development but also instills values of kindness and responsibility in caring for horses.

With its unique location and storied past, the Bega Pony Club is more than just a training ground; it is a community nurturing future champions. As the club celebrates this significant milestone, the focus remains on continuing its legacy of excellence in equestrian sports.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Bega Pony Club commemorates this landmark anniversary with special events and activities throughout the year.
