UPDATE: Broadmeadows-based initiative Project REAL has just been awarded the prestigious Engaging Kids in School Award at the Victorian Protecting Children Awards, recognizing its vital work in supporting children at risk of dropping out of education. The award ceremony took place earlier today, September 2, 2023, highlighting the program’s innovative approach to re-engaging students.
Project REAL, run by Banksia Gardens Community Services, focuses on children aged 9-12 who have become disengaged from school. This groundbreaking program collaborates closely with families, carers, and educational institutions to facilitate tailored learning opportunities that meet each child’s unique needs. By ensuring that education is not merely an aspiration but a tangible reality, Project REAL is making a significant impact on the lives of its participants.
Since its inception in 2017, Project REAL has successfully assisted nearly 60 children in returning to regular learning environments. The program offers practical support, including family support plans, school transportation, and even organizing lunches, all designed to eliminate barriers to school attendance.
The emotional and social benefits have been profound. Many students, who previously struggled with long absences due to behavioral challenges, are now demonstrating remarkable improvements in attendance, social skills, and emotional regulation. Jaime De Loma-Osorio Ricon, deputy chief executive of Banksia Gardens Community Services, expressed pride in the team’s dedication, stating, “The reason I decided to nominate the team is because I believe they are very dedicated and hardworking educators that don’t give up on our kids, and I think they need to be celebrated.”
The significance of this award extends beyond recognition; it underscores the critical need for programs aimed at re-engaging at-risk youth. As educational disparities widen, initiatives like Project REAL serve as a beacon of hope, demonstrating what can be achieved with commitment and collaboration.
With the spotlight now on Project REAL, further developments are expected as the program continues its mission to transform the educational experiences of vulnerable children. Stay tuned for updates on how this award will enhance the program’s resources and outreach.
This award not only marks a significant achievement for Project REAL but also serves as a call to action for other organizations to invest in similar initiatives that prioritize educational engagement and support for children in need.
