Bus Driver Found Guilty After Fatal CBD Crash Claims Young Life

UPDATE: A Brisbane Magistrates Court has just found bus driver Lindsay Francis Selby, 70, guilty of careless driving causing the death of 18-year-old Tia Cameron in a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded during the busy afternoon rush hour on March 8, 2024. The verdict comes after a one-day trial that revealed shocking details about the tragic crash.

At approximately 5 PM, Cameron was struck by Selby’s city council bus, pinning her against a building in Brisbane’s bustling CBD. The court heard that Selby, who had pleaded not guilty, failed to apply the brakes while turning downhill, resulting in catastrophic consequences for Cameron and others nearby.

Magistrate Aaron Simpson delivered the verdict, stating, “I find you guilty,” as Cameron’s family wept in the courtroom. Selby showed no visible reaction, staring ahead as the emotional weight of the verdict sank in. The case has drawn significant public and media attention due to the tragic nature of the incident.

CCTV footage from the scene captured the moment Selby turned the bus away from Brisbane’s Central train station and mounted the footpath at a speed of 23 km/h, striking multiple pedestrians. Both the prosecution and defense acknowledged that Selby had not braked, but differing narratives emerged regarding his attentiveness behind the wheel.

Prosecutor Susan Hedge argued that Selby’s actions indicated carelessness, stating, “The other explanation was he was careless. People make mistakes. People make errors.” In contrast, Selby’s defense claimed that the prosecution failed to prove he was criminally inattentive, suggesting instead that it was a tragic accident.

Following the verdict, the court will reconvene later today for the magistrate to provide a detailed explanation of the reasoning behind his decision. The emotional toll of this case resonates deeply with the community, prompting discussions about road safety and the responsibilities of professional drivers.

As the news unfolds, the focus will shift to the sentencing phase, where Selby could face significant legal repercussions. Authorities urge all drivers to remain vigilant, particularly in high-traffic areas, to prevent similar tragedies.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story, as the implications of this verdict continue to impact the community and raise important questions about safety on our roads.
