UPDATE: Calivil Bowling Club has clinched a thrilling 72-69 victory against Bendigo East, reinforcing its vital role in connecting the rural community of Calivil. This match, held Saturday on the greens of Bendigo, showcases the spirit and camaraderie that define this small but vibrant club.
Despite being one of the smallest clubs in the Bendigo lawn bowls competition, Calivil continues to foster community ties during the summer months. With just one team competing in both weekend and midweek pennant, the club remains a beacon of social interaction, especially as other local sports teams wane. Club president Glenn Ray emphasized the club’s mission: “It’s about having that social connection,” he stated, referring to their Thursday night practices that often end with barbecues and conversations among members.
On Saturday, Calivil faced off against the much larger Bendigo East, which boasts nine teams compared to Calivil’s single entry in the competition. Despite this disparity, Calivil’s players, aged from 29 to over 80, rallied together, demonstrating both skill and unity, ultimately securing their place fourth on the ladder after this crucial win.
“Winning is just the icing on the cake for another day of Calivil camaraderie on the green,” Ray stated, highlighting the club’s commitment to community over competition.
Calivil Bowling Club’s history spans decades, with member Walter Lourie returning to support the club after years away. “I thought there would be no better time to go back and help them out; it’s a great club,” he remarked, illustrating the deep personal connections that keep clubs like Calivil alive.
With a current membership of 27 players—17 men and 10 women—Calivil has recently upgraded its facilities with a new synthetic green, thanks to a government grant. This enhancement reduces the club’s water usage and alleviates volunteer pressure, ensuring the greens remain well-maintained.
Calivil is part of a supportive network of five northern country clubs competing in the Bendigo Playing Area, alongside Serpentine, Dingee, Bridgewater, and Inglewood. Ray acknowledged the efforts of league president Vicky Tierney and Johnny Jackman for their support of smaller clubs, facilitating successful tournaments and fostering camaraderie among all participants.
The community aspect of Calivil’s bowling extends beyond its immediate members, attracting players from surrounding areas like Lockington, Echuca, and Rochester for joint tournaments, promoting a spirit of support and unity.
As the season progresses, Calivil’s members will continue to face larger clubs, but their focus remains on building connections and enjoying the game. With their recent victory, they are not only competing on the green but also fortifying the social fabric that binds their community together.
