Casey Green Wedge Conflict Escalates with Mega Temple Proposal

URGENT UPDATE: The clash over Casey’s green wedge community has intensified as a proposed $250 million Hindu temple precinct in Cranbourne South faces federal scrutiny. Just before Christmas, the project was referred to the Federal Government under national environmental law due to its enormous scale and potential impacts on local ecosystems.

The proposal spans approximately 44 hectares at 1390-1450 Western Port Highway, dwarfing previous applications and reigniting community concerns. Local residents and environmentalists worry about threats to native vegetation and habitat for endangered species.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) recently rejected two other temple proposals in the region, marking a significant victory for local activists. The first, sought by the Melbourne Ayyappa Seva Sangam (MASS), involved a $4.5 million temple in Pearcedale, which was dismissed in August 2025 for conflicting with green wedge objectives. The second application, aiming to convert land in Cranbourne South for a temple and meditation center, was overturned due to its isolation and incompatibility with surrounding agricultural uses.

Local opposition has become more organized, with residents forming the Western Port Green Wedge Protection Group in mid-2025. They argue that repeated temple applications threaten the integrity of green wedge zones, designed to protect agricultural land and biodiversity.

Community commentators highlight that these planning disputes reflect deeper social divides, blending environmental concerns with apprehension about cultural change. As the number of temple applications rises, tensions are expected to escalate further, especially given the contentious nature of the latest proposal.

The Federal Government is now tasked with determining whether the temple precinct requires Commonwealth approval. The decision is anticipated in the coming weeks, as local activists continue to rally against what they perceive as a threat to their community’s rural character.

As this contentious issue unfolds, the green wedge community remains on high alert, advocating for a balanced approach to planning that respects both environmental integrity and cultural diversity. The outcome of the federal review could have profound implications for the future of land use in the area.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
